My name is Megan Sweeney & I am a junior from Scottsdale, Arizona where riding has been a three generation tradition for my family.

Horses have been the biggest part of my life for as long as I can remember, and I can’t imagine a future without them. I want to ride in college because it has been a dream of mine since I discovered that NCAA offered Hunt Seat riding as a sport back in seventh grade. After riding for thirteen years, I know that riding in college is the perfect next step in my career. I love meeting new people and making lifelong friends through riding, and I can’t wait to build new connections and grow as a student-athlete in a team setting.

I’ve been riding for thirteen years and competing for twelve, starting in leadline and working my way up through the hunter, equitation, and jumper rings. Over the years, I have been fortunate to train with some of the sport’s best, including Karen Healey, Archie Cox, Canadian Olympian Laura Balisky, and currently, Janet Hischer, whose dedication and talent continue to inspire me every day.

Some of my most meaningful accomplishments include winning the Medium Junior Jumper Classic at Desert Horse Park Week 10, consistently placing in the top three in every equitation flat class I’ve entered—most recently earning 2nd in the 15-17 Equitation Flat on a four-year-old—and developing and showing my trainers’ 4-6 year olds at A-rated shows. These moments make me proud of the foundation I’ve built through patience, hard work, and versatility.

Hard work and dedication define me—not just in competition but in every aspect of my riding. Whether it’s mentoring beginners by teaching them how to groom, tack up, and ride, or helping newcomers feel at home with barn tours and pony rides, I take pride in fostering a positive and inclusive environment. I babysit for my barn mates, help transport them from school to the barn several times a week, and assist with packing and prepping for shows by loading horses, carrying trunks, and making sure the horses are comfortable with fresh hay and water.

Over the years, I’ve learned how to manage competition pressure by developing a growth mindset. I remind myself how lucky I am to be doing what I love. I focus on my abilities, stay present, and remember to have fun. Before every round, I like to talk to my horse and remind both of us to enjoy the ride and trust our partnership.

Outside of riding, I love baking and trying new recipes for my family, friends, and teammates. I enjoy listening to mystery podcasts and going out with friends to explore new experiences—like line dancing, mechanical bull riding, and hiking. I’m also part of the Student Mentoring Club at my school, where I help younger students adjust to the school environment by playing games and building connections. Outside of school, I’m honored to serve as an ambassador for the Kindness Movement, a cause that has taught me the importance of using my voice to uplift others.

Academically, I attend Scottsdale Preparatory Academy in Scottsdale, Arizona, where I have a 4.22 weighted GPA in an all-honors curriculum. Previously, I maintained a 4.0 GPA at Phoenix Country Day School.

I come from a family of equestrians, including my grandmother, who introduced me to riding on her nationally celebrated horse, Duet. Having my mother as a fellow rider has also given me a lifelong teammate and second opinion at every turn.

I’m excited for the opportunity to ride in college, represent my team, make lifelong friendships, and continue growing both in and out of the saddle.
